Light tents are designed to make product photography easy.

The walls are translucent to provide soft, even reflectionless light, making the usually difficult task of photographic shiny objects much simpler.

The door is attached with velcro and has a slit to eliminate reflections of the camera & photographer from shiny items.

Four different coloured backdrops are included with Image Melbourne light tents. Should you need a different colour sheets of paper from your newsagent make great backdrops.

Light tents come in many sizes. You should select one about 25% larger than the biggest item you will be photographing so that you have an area of plain backdrop on all sides saving a lot of time editing images.

Continuous lighting
The least expensive way of providing good lighting is to buy a 350w pair of the lights shown here - simply place one on each side of the light tent. These are cool running fluros so won't damage heat sensitive items like food and plastic. They are daylight coloured to help reproduce colours accurately.

Larger light tents can also be lit with the umbrella holder or softbox style continuous lighting. This can be handy if you occasionally have an item too big to fit in the light tent as the softboxes provide smooth light without the light tent. For large light tent like the 120cm size the brighter umbrella or softbox systems are recommended.

A tripod is also a good idea to eliminate camera shake as shutter speeds are fairly low when using continuous lighting.

Flash is a great way of lighting the light tents. As described above, simply place one flash on each side. For larger light tents an umbrella, brollybox or softbox is a good idea to direct and spread the light wider. I recommend using V4 wireless triggers to make sure the flashes fire correctly without needing cables.

Light stands will also be needed to hold the lights or flashes at the correct position near the top of each side of the light tent.

For light tents under 60cm tall a pair of the 40cm stands will work well.

For light tents over 60cm you will need larger stands. The inexpensive 130cm stands will work but its worth considering the sturdier Nano stands as these have a much wider footprint so are more stable.

For especially difficult items a 3rd light positioned above the light tent can be helpful. A boom stand is the ideal way of positioning this extra light.
